So what exactly does a Quantity Surveyor do?
A quantity surveyor manages all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. They seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Many of these are specified by statutory building regulations, which the surveyor needs to understand and adhere to.
A quantity surveyor may work in an office or on site, and are involved in a project from the start, preparing estimates and costs of the work.
When the project is in progress, Quantity Surveyors keep track of any variations to the contract that may affect costs and create reports to show profitability.
The title of the job may also be referred to as a construction cost consultant or commercial manager.
So that's the role in a nutshell, but why are we continually told there is a shortage of qualified surveyors? Derby-based construction recruitment specialist, Farsight Construction Executive Search Consultant, Rebecca Smith, gives her view.
"New local clients often tell us that QS posts are tricky for them to fill, and we think that one reason is regional. " Explains Rebecca. "The standard qualifications for a Quantity Surveyor are accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors RICS - and our local universities just don't provide the relevant courses."
"We relish this type of enquiry and take the opportunity to flex our recruitment muscle! Our widespread connections and tailored recruiting techniques mean that we always know who the best people are - and have the power to call on them as and when our clients require."
"The role of a Quantity Surveyor can make the difference between a profitable and unprofitable project, so good QS's can get snapped up and kept comfortable in permanent employment for many years."
